BCC
Do you get emails from friends or organizations which post ALL of the email addresses in them? This spreads spam and adds your address to mailing lists like crazy. Reply to the sender and tell them to use BCC: (blind carbon copy) instead of the TO: field for mailing. All addresses are then suppressed in the message. It is also a very good idea to go through the message and strip out any extra links or other addresses prior to sending.

Google is my friend, and yours too!
My wife has been complaining to me (nagging is too harsh a term) for some time about an "F21" error she has been periodically getting on our Maytag washing machine. I am so powerful that I can call upon the collective knowledge of the entire human race so I finally got my carcass off the couch and went and googled up "Maytag F21". Whaddyaknow, a few minutes later we are popping off a cover and cleaning out a drain filter that we had heretofore been ignorant of. Two pennies, a bra underwire and about six ounces of black sludge later, our washing machine is running like a top again. Google is my friend.

OpenDNS
This is a great security tool to protect your network. They call it "cloud-based", but I hesitate to call it that. Basically you reconfigure your router to use their DNS instead of your ISP's DNS. Every time your computers make a request on the net they are directed via OpenDNS, complete with filtering options that you get to set. Basically it shuts off vast portions of nasty net. Not for the technically disinclined, but very good.

Anti-Virus Recommendation
Norton Internet Security 2012 is our recommended commercial security program, MaximumPC magainze ranks it #1 also. The main reason for this is that it is the first and ONLY program that can stop extortion-ware attacks consistently. It is also still fairly light at 40 mb, and a 3 user license will only set you back $59 here at Intrex.

Do NOT confuse this product with Norton 360, they are not even remotely the same. Norton 360 is up to its old tricks of loading down machines incredibly, AVOID.

We use Microsoft Security Essentials as a good freebie for new and newer computers.

We use Avast! for older XP computers. Available here.

AVG (Free or otherwise) is no longer a good product. AVOID

Check out AV Comparatives for an independent reviewer's take on all the latest security software. This guy doesn't care about memory footprint like I do (nobody seems to), but his reviews are fair and accurate.

Laptop reliability
I read a laptop reliability study from SquareTrade (pdf) recently that caused me to re-adjust several of my opinions about portable computing. Big adjustments for me:

1) Approximately 30% of all laptops are dead after three years; I thought it was higher.

2) HP is actually the most unreliable brand; I thought it would be Acer, which came in as third most unreliable. Asus and Toshiba are most reliable.
